1.What is Foxtuition?
Fox Tuition is a private tuition company based in the UK specialising in providing expert private tuition to students at all levels from 11+ to GCSE, A-level and University. Our tutors go through a rigorous selection process, are highly experienced and have been fully trained in our Fox tuition educational methodology.
Fox Tuition courses are managed and taught by one of our trained tutors and can provide a focus on six key area.
1. Exam technique
Within their classes students will have plenty of time to focus on 'exam technique'. Obviously the more a students knows the better they are likely to do, however, knowing the common pitfalls students make will give them the advantage in actually applying this knowledge.
For example one of the most common problems is students not answering the question as it is asked. Instead they panic, and jump straight in throwing all the possibly related they know onto the paper. By doing this they not only miss out on marks for answering correctly, but also hamper themselves for the other questions wasting time. To tackle this tutors can work with the student practicing past papers so that they are completely familiar with the structure of papers before entering the exam. Tutors can also help them practice and remember useful tricks such as using the marks as a guide. Marks on papers give a rough guide as to how long the answers should be e.g. a question worth 10 marks will be roughly double the length as a question worth 5 marks.
Students are taught 'exam technique' by a Fox Tuition tutor in the online classroom. The focus will be on working through past papers, discussing model answers until each student understands explicitly how papers are marked and how to get the best possible grade.
2. Educational success plans By writing up a step-by-step plan specifically designed for each student this ensures they will be prepared for their exams or able to keep on top of school work. Breaking the requirements down and incorporating weekly targets makes it easy for both student and tutor to keep track of their progress. With measures and reports it will be immediately clear as soon as the student falls off target so they can reassess how to get back on track.
3. Learning difficulties
Our approach to students with learning difficulties is unique. For example take our approach to dyslexia. Most people approach this as a learning difficulty instead of what it is, which is a learning difference.
Dyslexics are often good at understanding complex ideas in their head but have a poor record of putting structured arguments on paper. As a result, many students with high ability under-perform in exams because the arguments are 'lost in translation' between the answer as a thought process and it manifesting itself as a written answer.
In a Fox Tuition lesson, dyslexic students will be encouraged to talk their way through their answers with their tutor and the tutor will then mark their oral answer as if the answer was written on paper and the tutor was an unforgiving examiner. The tutor will mark the answer, tell the student how to improve the question, and then ask again and again until the student is getting correct answers every time. Once they are speaking high marking answers fluently then it is a small step to make to get them to practise writing answers down.
Each student is unique and our tutors approach each individual case differently to help each student realise their potential.
4. Learning efficiency
Many students find that however much effort they put into learning the rewards are minimal. Our tutors can help students really focus on how to learn. Everything from how to read to remember to structuring essays and making good revision notes.
5. Educational consultancy
Many students find it difficult to cope, even if they are keeping on track with their knowledge of the subject they find it very difficult to organise their time especially in the build up to exams. Students can become overwhelmed by the amount they need to cover and it can swamp them. Having a few sessions with an educational consultant can really help students plan an efficient working structure so they can check they are on target and covering all the necessary material. This can help throughout the term as well as at exam times.
6. Syllabus knowledge
Every week students will be given preparatory reading material outside of their lessons, which they will then be tested on during each lesson. Tutors move at the students pace so that they fully understand everything. This guarantees that each student has the adequate knowledge levels to succeed.

Our tutors will have the tools to react to different situations, whether it's a top up focusing on exam technique or an in depth look at the ways to improve how each student is learning.
All our tutors undergo a rigorous interview process and are fully trained in the Fox Tuition Methodology.
8.What is the Fox tuition methodology?
The course puts a specific focus on exam technique. The Fox Tuition method is learning, practise, feedback, and identification of exam techniques to be used in the future. This process is habit forming and will drill students into writing high quality answers every time. At Fox Tuition we believe that:
"Exam success is 50% knowledge and 50% technique"
What we mean by this is that it's not just knowing your stuff which is important, but also practicing exam skills. We have found that many students who have good levels of understanding still make silly mistakes. The solution is simple: practice, practice, and more practice. The more exams that students practise with our tutors, the better they will become at noticing how they can improve and give a model answer.
9.What is the Fox tuition philosophy?
- Every student is capable of a top grade.
- Academic achievement is not strongly related to intelligence but is strongly related to how that individual has prepared for the exam.
- Low achievement is not a result of low ability it is from ineffective learning.
- Different students learn in different ways.
- The reason why students under perform in exams is not lack of knowledge, it is lack of exam technique.
- Exam success is 50% knowledge and 50% technique.
- To achieve exam technique takes practice, practice and more practice.
- Mistakes are good and crucial aspect of the academic process.
- A plan that is timetabled and measurable can ensure success.
- Questions are a crucial component of the academic process.

3.What is the best way to ensure each student gets a top grade?
Whether you are with Fox Tuition or working alone; it is all about creating a good plan and sticking to it.
- Create a comprehensive week-by-week plan that gives clear weekly goals and objectives.
- The plan should include a reporting mechanism, whereby if you fail to meet your goals this is immediately made clear.
- The plan should cover every single part of the syllabus so that as long as they meet every goal the student will be completely prepared, long before the exam date.
- The plan should also include regular slots of testing their level of knowledge and exam type questions.
- The plan should be flexible; i.e. if goals are not being achieved it is important to readdress the issues and resolve them.
4.Is it wrong to focus so heavily on exams?
Far from it; an emphasis on past papers and exam technique will indicate the areas where students make mistakes so we can work out how they can improve.
Most problems can be found in exam technique: e.g. if the student has a thorough understanding but produces poorly structured arguments, then that can be quickly detected. Each problematic question is worked on until the student has a clear understanding of why they went wrong and how to improve for next time.
5.How does fox tuition compare with other types of tuition?
All types of exam preparation are beneficial, be it independent study, revision plans, or private tuition. Our lessons incorporate all the best aspects of these different approaches; exam technique, a learning methodology, regular practise and a clear plan. Progress is measurable, because students are given reading which will be tested in the lesson and they will be given a score out of ten for their answers. They will also be given example answers so that they can play the role of the examiner and mark other people's work. This course will help students to think like an examiner so they can improve exam performance and teach them how to plan their revision.
6.What is Fox Tuitions approach to students with learning difficulties?
Our approach to students with learning difficulties is unique. For example take our approach to dyslexia. Most people approach this as a learning difficulty instead of what it is, which is a learning difference.
Dyslexics are often good at understanding complex ideas in their head but have a poor record of putting structured arguments on paper. As a result, many students with high ability under-perform in exams because the arguments are 'lost in translation' between the answer as a thought process and it manifesting itself as a written answer.

7.What is the Fox Tuition approach to lazy students?
Typically, lots of students are considered to be 'lazy' and 'work-shy', yet few seem to ask the question: why? Low motivation is one of the biggest reasons for poor performance. However, the typical approach of labelling students as 'lazy' is ineffective and can compound the problem. Our approach is firm but fair.
Firm Every student starting on the Fox Tuition course will make a firm, unequivocal, written and recorded commitment to the course. This will include committing to handing in work on time, approaching their mistakes in the right way, and doing the necessary reading to be adequately prepared for each lesson. It will be made clear to the student that any violation of this commitment will be immediately reported, not only to the student, but also to their parents, and it will also be made clear how this will affect their overall plan unless immediate action is taken. A reporting system is in place whereby if the student is late, or underperforms, or fails to complete their work, then this will be communicated to them and their parents. The Fox Tuition system is firm, but fair and typically we have a good record of dealing with students who struggle to get work handed in on time.
Fair It is regularly the case that 'lazy' students lack an understanding about how to produce high marking answers and even if they work harder, they still get poor results. If hard work does not increase results most students think that it's not worth trying. Tutors will 'break down' the students' answers, explaining why they did and didn't get the marks, showing example answers that did and didn't get marks and then get them to recreate the answer until they know for sure how to get high marks. The first step out of laziness is giving that student know-how, or exam technique.
8.What is the Fox Tuition approach to highly disorganised students?
Organisation of workload is a relatively simple process, yet too many students are extremely disorganised and this leads to things being left too late and students getting poor results.
The Fox Tuition system is designed to confront disorganisation from a number of different angles.
- A weekly plan is formulated, whereby the student must achieve topics within their subject so that they will have achieved the entire syllabus knowledge with ample time left to revise before the exam.
- Students doing the Fox Tuition course will be regularly checked up on to ensure that they are managing their workload effectively. It is also very unclear to some students what they need to focus on.
Fox Tuition will prescribe instructions on exactly which material they need to focus on for each lesson. Fox Tuition also focuses on motivational aspects and students with learning difficulties. Part of our mantra is:
- "Don't worry about your exams, worry about your weekly target."
9.How can you tell if the student is doing enough work?
A good question, and there is usually lots of confusion about this issue. Fox Tuition approaches this in three parts:
- Diagnostic test: In the first lesson, we will run a diagnostic test to determine the level of syllabus understanding the student currently has. This will give a very strong indication as to how much work is needed and what needs to be focused on.
- Tutor feedback: After each lesson there is a comprehensive report including tutor feedback. If students arrive late for lessons, then parents will immediately be notified. Students will also be given a score for every lesson which will give an indication of how much preparation they have done for the lesson.
- Student plan: Students will help draw up a weekly plan charting out what needs to covered so that they will be completely ready for the exam.
Our system is exactly built to deal with conflicting reports on how much work is needed. It will give you a snapshot of how much they know, how much they are achieving in lessons and how much they need to do for their exams. We often find that low work rate usually relates to other factors, such as lack of motivation, disorganisation or a learning difficulty.
